Dear Reader,
Wow, has it been six months already? Time flies when you’re writing thousands of words. As I said in my previous post A Summer at The Chautauquan Daily, I have the pleasure of serving the community of Chautauqua NY for the nine-week summer season. Summer here is far different than summers almost anywhere else. Speakers from all fields like art, politics, religion, and more are visiting. Some names you might recognize:
- Jon Krakauer, author of Missoula (also Into Thin Air and Into the Wild)
- Kal Penn, actor (the Harold & Kumar films, Dr. Kutner on House, M.D., seen most recently on CBS’ cancelled Battle Creek) and former associate director of White House Office of Public Engagement
- Erik Larson, author of Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania (his previous nonfiction narratives The Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts are being adapted for the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks attached to each, respectively)
- Ava DuVernay, filmmaker who directed last year’s acclaimed MLK/Civil Rights film Selma
- Beau Willimon, playwright and creator of Netflix’s wildly successful House of Cards
- Carol Burnett, famous actress/comedienne
And those are only the most well-known. The list goes on and on and on, an inspiring collection of the learned and the cultured. I’ll be covering them as much as possible. Should you be interested, follow me here, on Facebook, or on Twitter. Preferably all three. I’m attention-starved.
But enough of that! Let’s focus on you, the reader. As a Slog lover and/or hater, I want to hear your thoughts on the Slog. Is it working for you? What features do you like best? How can I improve both my writing and the experience of reading it for you? I welcome any and all feedback. If I don’t fail, I can’t learn and improve.* The poll is below.
If you have further thoughts, please leave them in the comments! Once again, thanks for reading the Slog. Here’s to getting through the whole year together 🙂
Much love,
-SPF
*That’s what I tell myself as I cry in a corner at the first hint of failure. I’m not a proud man.
